Call for Tutorials [closed]

We invite you to submit proposals for delivering a Tutorial at the International Conference on Evolutionary Multi-criterion Optimization (EMO 2025) in Canberra, Australia during 4-7 March 2025.

Tutorials are intended to provide a valuable opportunity for attendees, especially students and early career researchers, to learn from domain experts in the field. Tutorials should provide an introduction to interesting research directions in the field and cover the key developments in sufficient breadth. Interactivity in the sessions to engage the audience is encouraged.

The tutorial slots are expected to be 75-90 minutes and delivered in-person. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
  • evolutionary and population-based algorithms;
  • surrogate-based or Bayesian optimization methods;
  • machine learning/artificial intelligence-based hybrid methods;
  • theoretical foundations of multiobjective optimization;
  • multiple-criteria decision-making;
  • benchmarking, performance indicators, and visualization tools;
  • practical applications.

To apply, please send a brief proposal to the tutorial chair Prof. Hussein Abbass (h.abbass@unsw.edu.au) with the subject line ‘EMO 2025 Tutorial proposal’ containing the following information:
  • Title;
  • A brief description of the scope and content (~ 1 page);
  • Name and brief biography of the organizer(s);
  • Email address of the corresponding organizer(s);
  • If the tutorial has been delivered before, please indicate the venue(s) and differences if any.

Important dates

  • Proposal due by: November 18, 2024 AoE (non-extensible);
  • Notification of outcome: November 28, 2024 AoE.
Being a single-track conference, the number of tutorials we will schedule is anticipated to be low. In selecting the tutorials, the organizing committee will consider the relevance to the conference, anticipated interest in the topic, diversity of topics (across tutorials) and the expertise of the organizers.

One presenter from each tutorial will be eligible for discounted registration fee. The details of registration fee will be available on the EMO 2025 website shortly.

Scope

The conference is devoted to studying various aspects of multiobjective optimization including, but not limited to:
  • evolutionary and population-based algorithms;
  • surrogate-based or Bayesian optimization methods;
  • machine learning/artificial intelligence-based hybrid methods;
  • theoretical foundations of multiobjective optimization;
  • multiple-criteria decision-making;
  • benchmarking, performance indicators, and visualization tools;
  • practical applications.

Types of submissions

The conference will comprise the main EMO track, along with special MCDM and Industry tracks. Please read the information below carefully to select the correct track for your submission, and to note the text and presentation format options. The program committee reserves the right to move the submission to a different track if deemed unsuitable to the track selected in the submission.
  • EMO track: This is the main track of the conference, where traditional full papers (maximum 12 pages excluding references) should present state-of-the-art results on theory, algorithms, benchmarking, applications and other topics of interest as outlined in the ‘Scope’ section.

  • MCDM special track: This track is intended to foster collaborations and knowledge-exchange between the two distinct but related areas of EMO and Multi-criteria Decision-making (MCDM). It recognizes the value of the methods in either domain that may be less known in the other, but can be of mutual benefit in solving open challenges in both fields.

    For this track, the authors have an option to submit a full paper (maximum 12 pages excluding references) or an abstract (maximum 2 pages including references if any), which are MCDM focussed. Studies that use non-evolutionary methods are also welcome, but the relevance to the EMO field should be indicated for the benefit of the audience.

  • Industry special track: This track is intended to encourage collaborations and knowledge-exchange between practitioners and academics on topics relevant to the conference. The aim is to improve the collective understanding of the fundamental challenges that occur in real-world applications and work collaboratively towards solving them.

    To emphasize the involvement of practitioners, at least one author of the submission must be from industry or non-academic institution (e.g. public service) to qualify for submission in this track. The application papers not meeting this criterion can instead submit to the main EMO track.

    The authors have an option to submit a full paper (maximum 12 pages excluding references) or an abstract (maximum 2 pages including references if any), which are focussed on industrial/non-academic problems.
All full paper submissions (submitted to any track) will undergo standard peer-review (at least 2, typically 3 reviews). All accepted full papers will be published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) proceedings as in the past conference editions.

The review and selection of the abstract submissions will be overseen by the MCDM/Industry chairs and 1-2 additional reviewers from the program committee if needed. The selection will be based on the technical quality, relevance to the conference, and scheduling constraints (if applicable).

The accepted abstracts will be included collectively in the backmatter of the EMO 2025 Springer conference proceedings but will not appear as individual publications with their own DOI.

Presentation at the conference

The accepted papers, both full and abstract, will be presented as either oral or poster presentations. The submitting authors will be given an option to specify their preference of the presentation mode (oral/poster/either), based on what suits their content the best. The final mode of presentation will be decided by considering the authors' preferences, number of submissions received/accepted, and the conference scheduling constraints.

We will endeavour to accommodate the authors' preferences to the best extent possible but anticipate that there might be some cases where it becomes infeasible.

We would like to stress that the presentation mode assigned will in no way be indicative of the quality or the reviews of the paper.

Please note: EMO2025 is primarily intended to be run as in-person conference. Even so, we recognize that travel may sometimes become infeasible for some delegates due to various circumstances. We will allow for online presentation in such cases. However, the remote participants may not get access to other on-site sessions. Please consider this in your planning. More information about the final format will be provided closer to the conference, once there is more clarity around the number of submissions. To get the best value out of the conference, we request the prospective participants to make every effort to attend the conference on-site.

Awards

At the conference, we will confer an Outstanding EMO Paper Award, and Outstanding EMO Student Paper Award. Full papers in any track will be eligible for these awards (independently of oral presentation mode). For further details, please consult the conference Awards procedure on the EMO website.
